Flea & Tick Season: How to Prepare & Keep Your Pets Safe

The decreasing temperature often means one thing: fleas and ticks are coming out of hibernation, ready to feast on your pup. You'll want to start thinking about your flea and tick control plan as soon as the weather cools down. Preparation is critical, and here's a simple guide to help you out:

What Are Fleas?

Fleas are tiny insects that live off of the blood of mammals. They are parasites and are relatively easy to control; however, they can cause extreme discomfort for you and your pet if left untreated.

What are the Symptoms of Fleas?

Look for the following symptoms in your pet:

  • Scratching at the skin (especially the back, neck, stomach, and ears)
  • Skin irritation/bites/rash
  • Excessive grooming
  • Hair loss
  • Flea dirt

What are Ticks?

Ticks are small arachnids that attach to your pet's skin to feed on blood. They are parasites and, like fleas, can cause a lot of discomfort and illness if left untreated.

What are the Symptoms of a Tick Infestation?

  • Redness, irritation, and a raised lump where the tick is located
  • Skin irritation/bites/rash
  • Hair loss
  • Lack of appetite

How to Prevent Ticks & Fleas?

Taking preventative action is the best thing you can do to keep your dog safe. There are several methods of prevention, so we encourage you to do your research and choose the one that works best for your situation.

Keep fleas and ticks out of your home. If you suspect fleas or ticks have invaded your home, a thorough vacuuming and application of flea and tick control will prevent any further infestations.

Clean the yard. If you have a yard, keep the grass and brush mowed and the ground clear of any brush or leaves. This will disrupt the flea and tick environment outside, keeping them from coming into your home. If you have a pool, it's a good idea to treat the water with a pool flea treatment as well.

Treat your pet regularly. Several topical and oral medications can be used to prevent fleas and ticks in your pet. Be sure to read the label carefully to select the product most suitable for your pet. Generally, the products with more active ingredients (such as pyrethrin and permethrin) will be more effective but may irritate your pet.

Check your pet daily. The best way to prevent a flea or tick infestation is to check your pet daily. When checking your pet, look for any of the symptoms described above. Once you have found fleas or ticks, you will need to treat your pet immediately.

What to Do If You Find a Tick or Flea on Your Pet?

If you have found a tick on your pet, you should remove it as soon as possible. Gently pull the tick out with tweezers, careful not to squeeze the tick or break it open. Do not attempt to burn, drown or smother the tick.

Then, you will want to isolate your pet from any other animals to prevent the spread of fleas. After that, thoroughly clean your home and treat your pet with a topical or oral flea or tick medication.

The Bottomline

Fleas and ticks can cause a lot of discomfort for your pet. Take action early to prevent infestations, and always be sure to check your pet for signs of fleas and ticks. The more you are vigilant, the better your dog's chances of enjoying a flea-free, tick-free season!
